George Yoakum and Martha VanBibber, already third generation Americans, had a son Valentine known as 'Felty'. Born ca. 1785 in the Powell Valley, he moved his family to Roane County, TN in the 1820's. He died in the winter of 1828 leaving his wife with over 10 kids living at home. 1830 Roane Co., Tennessee Census - Valentine died in 1828/29, prior to the 1830 census. His wife, Charlotte Yoakum is listed in the 1830 Roane County, Tennessee census with 12 members in her household (Roane 24: Yoakum, Sharlotte 12121-012101). She is shown to be living next door to Peter YOAKUM, Valentine's brother.
This census was done in 1830 and the three oldest girls had probably married or moved out of the house, concurring with the census that the oldest child was a boy, George (see Issues). This would mean that Valentine and Charlotte had a total of 14 children! Valentine's 2nd son was Isaac Rite Yoakum born 2/17/1812 Claiborne Co., TN. who married Rachel Sisk Clark in Roane, Co. in 1836. |

Isaac YOAKUM, b. 17 Feb 1800** in TN.Married Rachel , who was b. May 1820 in TN. Isaac d. 8 Mar 1882 in Texas Co., MO. Children:1. Margarett
YOAKUM b. 1836 in TN NOTES: Isaac YOAKAM is listed in the 1840 census
as head of household living in Bradley Co., TN. I
need to check the census and not just the index to get the number of persons in the
household. This is the first year a YOAKUM
was listed in Bradley County and the only one that I found. Isaac YOAKUM is listed in the 1850 census of Tennessee index, Vol 7, Wallard through Zumbro as below: YORKUM, Isaac 37, Racheal 28, Margarett 14, William 12, Elizabeth 10, John H. 9, Jesse 8, James 7, Susan 3, Simon 1, T T, Br-715-379. T T means both Isaac and Racheal was born in TN. Br is for Bradley County, 715 is the families number on the original schedule, and 379 is the page the info is found on the microfilm. The next census with Isaac YOAKUM on it is the 1860 census of Missouri, Texas County, Piney Township. I knew to look in Texas Co. because of the info I received on Jesse YOAKUM’s military and pension records. The census is listed below:
The difference from 1850 and 1860 is that Margarett is not listed,
probably married. Nancy, Isaac, and Mary Ann
are listed and not born in TN. I next found Isaac YOAKUM in the 1880 census of Texas Co., MO. For some reason I don’t have the 1870 census but, I believe they were still in Texas Co., during the 1870’s.
* I believe this to be the son of Nancy YOAKUM That is the last census with Isaac YOAKUM. The next place I find him is in an index of the Wolford Cemetery, Piney Township, Texas Co., MO. It gives birth date 17 Feb 1800. I need to look at the 1880 census again. I did this research 20 years ago and at that time it look to me like it said his father was born in Prussia. In light of this new info I need to check the census again.

Brenda Yoakum-Kriz gives
Isaac’s parents as Valentine and Charlotte (Reynolds) YOAKUM. This info centainly ties in with what I know. She says that the Valentine family moved from
Roane Co., TN to Bradley Co., TN. Isaac was
probably b. in Roane Co. Valentine was the
son of George and Martha (VAN BEBBER) YOAKUM. If
this new info proves to be correct, which I have no reason to think that it will not, it
will make the connection to the YOAKUM family that so many are researching. Brenda gives the children of Valentine and
Charlotte as follows: These are the only named children, Brenda believes there is probably more. Conclusions:I believe Isaac R. YOAKUM was born sometime between 1809 and 1813, probably in 1812. He was born in Roane Co., TN the son of Valentine and Charlotte (REYNOLDS) YOAKUM. Valentine is the son of George and Martha (VAN BEBBER) YOAKUM. Valentine died before 1830 and Charlotte remarried an Edward Edwards and moved to Bradley Co., TN. This is where I find Isaac mentioned in public records for the first. I believe he was married in Bradley Co., to Rachel. All of their children were born in Bradley Co. except the last three. In the 1860 census of Texas Co., MO Nancy is listed as 8 years old and born in IL, Isaac as 6 years old and born in AL, Mary as 1 year old and born in MO. That would have put them in MO sometime in 1859. I have never before found any info on Valentine, so I guess that is
why I could not make a connection. By making
this connection the line can be extended back to Heinrich JOCHIEM, based on the research
of Bob G. Derryberry and Steve Smith.
