Sixth Generation

Family of Valentine ("Felty") Yoakum (24) & Charlotte "Lottie" Reynolds

38. Isaac R. Yoakum. Born on 17 Feb 1812 in Roane CO., TN. Isaac R. died in Texas Co., MO on 8 Mar 1882, he was 70. Buried in Wolford Cemetary, Clara, MO.

11Isaac I's mother, Charlotte Reynolds Yoakum, moved to Bradley Co., Tennessee after she remarried to Edward Edwards in Roane Co. on Dec. 26, 1831. Isaac's father, Valentine, had died in 1830 and when Isaac married Rachel L. Sisk in Roane Co. TN in 1836, they followed his mom to Bradley Co. where they were the recipients of 1280 acres of the Ocoee Cherokee Indian District. An Excellent creek bisects the north 40 acres. The location of their home is some 6 miles northest of Cleveland, TN. It has also been 7said Isaac "worked on one of Edward's farms until Edward died in 1851 and the children of Edward's 1st marriage received the farms". Land claims were often in dispute during this time and Isaac could have been unlucky, either way by 1851 he was on the road

13Isaac Yoacum bought 39.59 acres in NESW section 29. 1 south, 9 east in AL from Huntsville, AL land office 15 Jun 1854 ( date coinsides with the birth of Isaac 'Ike' in May of that year in the county).

"On Wednesday, March 8, 1882, Isaac Yoakum Sr. suddenly pitched forward in his chair and fell dead on the floor." so states George Shyrock in the 1998 refresh of his Yoakum overview. He continues "...having lived 72 years and successfully weathered enormous hardships, his earthly journey over. His youngest son Isaac Rite 'Ike' Yoakum, stayed on the original farm for the remainder of his life, raising his own large family. About 1888, Ike built a large house. Following the death of his father, Ike's mother, Rachel, and his oldest brother, William Rilie, moved to Dixon, Missouri, to live with her son Jesse Franklin and family until her death in 1905." - George Shryock

The strong presence of Indian blood in the family comes from many sources. I have been told that two of the women marrying Yoakum men in the 1800's were full blooded indians; the one Cherokee and the other Osage. Though not proven yet by acceptable documentation, stories and pictures of the children of Isaac Rite and Rachel Sisk show people with substantial degrees of Indian blood. Nellie's children had the physical characteristics of the Cherokee and Irene Yoakum has been described as a beautiful woman who possessed the classic features of our Indian ancestors.

This information has been heavily suppressed as it wasn't PC to be of mixed blood. Before her death, Nellie Yoakum declared publicly her grandmother was a full blooded Cherokee. Irene Yoakum Cowan was the first to tell me of Rachel's Indian heritage and she was adamant that no matter what else was said - ".. .they were trying to hide the connection", and she "spoke the truth".

14YOAKUM ANCESTORS OF DANIEL R. MCMURRAY

1. Isaac YOAKUM, b. 17 Feb 1800** in TN. Married Rachel , who was b. May 1820 in TN. Isaac d. 8 Mar 1882 in Texas Co., MO.

11. Mary Ann YOAKUM b. 1859 in MO, m. W.A. HIGGINS 15 Jun 1877

NOTES: Isaac YOAKAM is listed in the 1840 census as head of household living in Bradley Co., TN. I need to check the census and not just the index to get the number of persons in the household. This is the first year a YOAKUM was listed in Bradley County and the only one.

In the Bradley Co. Circuit Court Minute Book for 1837-1842 Isaac YOCUM is listed as a witness for the State on 29 Dec 1840 in the State Vs. Elizabeth HENDERSON alias Elizabeth FANBUSH. Isaac YOCUM was paid for 4 days at $.75 per day for a total of $3.00.

Isaac YOAKUM is listed in the 1850 census of Tennessee index, Vol 7, Wallard through Zumbro as below: YORKUM, Isaac 37, Racheal 28, Margarett 14, William 12, Elizabeth 10, John H. 9, Jesse 8, James 7, Susan 3, Simon 1, T T, Br-715-379.

T T means both Isaac and Racheal was born in TN. Br is for Bradley County, 715 is the families number on the original schedule, and 379 is the page the info is found on the microfilm.

The next census with Isaac YOAKUM on it is the 1860 census of Missouri, Texas County, Piney Township. I knew to look in Texas Co. because of the info I received on Jesse YOAKUM's military and pension records. The census is listed below:

Dwelling# Family# name age sex color occupation birthplace
113 515 Yoakum, Isaac R 48 M W Farmer TN
Rachel 40 F W TN
William R 22 M W TN
Elizabeth 21 F W TN

Jessie F 16 M W TN
James 15 M W TN
Sarah 12 F W TN
Simon 10 M W TN
Nancy 8 F W IL
Isaac 6 M W AL
Mary Ann 1 F W MO

The difference from 1850 and 1860 is that Margarett is not listed, probably married. Nancy, Isaac, and Mary Ann are listed and not born in TN.

I next found Isaac YOAKUM in the 1880 census of Texas Co., MO. For some reason I don't have the 1870 census but, I believe they were still in Texas Co., during the 1870's.

That is the last census with Isaac YOAKUM. The next place I find him is in the Wolford Cemetery, Piney Township, Texas Co., MO.

Isaac YOAKUM 17 Feb 1800 - Mar 1882**

** I think this birth date is wrong. Based on the census his birth date would be 1809-1813.

The one clue I have on the parents of Isaac YOAKUM is the birthplace of his father given as Prussia on the 1880 census and his mother as VA. If this is correct he may not have any connection to the YOAKUM's descending from Heinrich JOCHEM, since they came to the U.S. later than Hienrich JOCHEM Also, according to my grandpa William Clarence SLOAN his great-grandmother, Rachel YOAKUM, was a Cherokee Indian.

2. Jessie Franklin YOAKUM b. 20 May 1844 in Bradley Co., TN. Married Martha (MORROW) BEACHUM, b. 7 Aug 1845 in GA. He died 26 Feb 1925 in Maries Co., MO. She died 17 Oct 1886 in Maries Co., MO. Both are buried in the Williams Cemetery near Dixon, MO. Jessie m. 2d Bethaire (JONES) MORROW 19 Jun 1890.

9. Mary YOAKUM b. Apr 1884 in Maries Co., MO, m. Jim KELLY**

* I met Edith YOAKUM and her son Simon YOAKUM in 1982. Simon lives on the old home place of Jessie YOAKUM near Dixon, MO. They didn't have any more info than what I have presented.

** Mary and Jim KELLY have two sons and one daughter still living in the Springfield, MO area. Alfa ROGERS, Isham KELLY and Sammy KELLY. They have no additional info either.

NOTES:
My gg-grandfather was Jessie Franklin YOAKUM. On his military and pension records it is stated that Jessie joined the Union Army on 4 Aug 1862 as a private in Co. "I", 32nd Regiment, Missouri Volunteer Infantry. He was honorably discharged at Rolla, MO on 31 Dec 1863 after becoming sick and unfit for military duty. He had served in the Vicksburg, MS campaign. On his Declaration for Pension he stated that he was born 20 May 1844 in Bradley Co., TN and that since his discharge he had lived in Brighton, Macoupin Co., IL until 1867 and near Dixon, MO until the present (1907). One sister was born in IL. A lot of Yoakum and Yocum families lived in IL particularly Sangamom Co. Any connections?

I found Jessie listed in the 1870 census of Maries Co., Miller Township, Missouri as below:

Page Family name age sex color birthplace

Martha Yokum 28 F W TN
L.E. Yokum 3 F W MO

Next is the 1880 census of Maries Co., Miller Township, Missouri:

I have not been able to reconcile the L.E. and E.H. listed in 1870 and not in 1880. Maybe I have the wrong family in 1870.??????

The 1900 census of Maries Co., Miller Township, Missouri lists the family as follows:

As can be seen Jessie has a new wife. His first wife, Martha, died 17 Oct 1886 and is buried in the Williams Cemetery near Dixon, MO. Also, his mother and brother is now living with him. They are listed previously with Isaac YOAKUM in Texas Co., MO and Bradley Co., TN.

Jessie YOAKUM died 26 Feb 1925 at his home. His Death Certificate has what seems to be several errors based on my research. However, it does give his father as Isaac, But, the birthplace is given as IL. The info was given by Chas YOAKUM of Houston, MO. Relationship unknown to me.

I have a copy of a statement from Bethaire (JONES)(MORROW) YOAKUM when she was applying for a widows pension. In this statement she says that the doctor made a mistake on the death date of Jessie YOAKUM. She states that he died at 9:15, 27 Feb 1925. In this statement she also says that her first husband, James MORROW, was a half-brother to Jessie YOAKUM'S first wife. She says that her name was Martha BEACHUM. According to family legend Jessie's first wife had been married to a Union soldier who died. Jessie met Martha in the Army hospital at Rolla, MO where she was caring for her husband. I have the 1850 census listing James MORROW and Martha MORROW in the same family. I believe MORROW is Martha's maiden name and her first husband's name was BEACHUM.

NOTE: All four of the above were known by their middle names. As far as I know none of them ever used their first names. Also, shortly after WWI they began spelling their name SLOAN.

Endnotes: I have carefully looked at The Known and Suspected Descendants of Heinrich & Gerturde JOCHEM compiled by Bob. G. Derryberry. I have not been able to make any connections with anyone. On #198, George W. YOACHUM's son #528 Augustine T. "Teen" YOACKUM, Bob Derryberry mentions that there is an Isaac Rite YOKUM, son of Isaac, born in 1854 in IL. Is this a son of my Isaac and Rachel YOAKUM and a brother of my Jessie Franklin YOAKUM? No further info isgiven about Isaac Rite YOKUM, at least that I could find.

Is my Isaac YOAKUM a totally different branch than any of the YOAKUM's that are more well known? If Isaac's father was born in Prussia, and Isaac was born in the U.S. in the early 1800's, then hisfather would not have been a close relative of Heinrich JOCHEM who came to the U.S. in 1661.

It seems strange that Nancy was born in IL and Isaac in AL. Did the family really move from TN to IL to AL and then to MO in a 10 year span?????

In 1836 when Isaac R. was 23, he married Rachel Sisk Clark, daughter of John Clark (1782-1852) & Ellender (Nelly) Sisk (1778-1871). Born in 1820 in TN. Rachel Sisk died in Dixon, MO.

Following the death of his father, Ike's mother, Rachel, and his oldest brother, William Rilie, moved to Dixon, Missouri, to live with her son Jesse Franklin and family until her death in 1905."

Subject: Rachel Sisk Clark Yoacum

Hi, Bob. I, too, went back to Rootsweb and checked the info you had submitted. Didn't look at your post or my response, so I really don't know what I said in the post. However, I'll work from memory to let you know about errors in your data.

I am descended from Mary Clark, who was a sister of Rachel. I have studied the Clarks and Sisks for years and kept running into Isaac Yoacum. So for years I kept trying to find a way to tie him to my Clark family. Everything on the 'net gave Rachel's maiden name as Sisk.

Too explain further, I have proof that my Mary Clark is the daughter of John Clark and Ellender (Nelly) Sisk. Ellender's maiden name came from her bounty land warrant application. Therefore, it seemed likely that Rachel Sisk Yoacum was her niece, but I couldn't make the tie.

Finally, papers surfaced in Bradley County, TN, regarding the settlement of John Clark's estate. Rachel Clark Yoacum, wife of Isaac, was one of his children!!

After contacting another researcher (Dan McMurray), who had always doubted that Sisk was Rachel's maiden name, the reason for the errors became clear. I understand that Rachel's tombstone says Rachel Sisk Yoacum, leading everyone to believe that Sisk was her maiden name, when in fact it was her mother's maiden name, and Rachel was the child (as there always was one) that was given the name.
In her own children Rachel passed on her maiden name (Clark) to her son James.

There seems to be evidence that Ellender "Nelly" Sisk Clark was the daughter of Daniel Clark and Rachel Loving Clark. Daniel was killed at the Battle of King's Mtn. in the Revolution. His widow, Rachel, remarried to Gabriel Loving. In court records in NC, Gabriel was givne guardianship of Daniel's four children, 2 boys and 2 girls (all were named.) Nelly was one of those children. This was about 1781 (memory again).

There is census evidence that the 2 Sisk boys went to SC after 1790, evidently with some of their Sisk uncles. Around 1800, the Lovings left NC and went to KY. Several of the Sisks who had remained in NC also went to KY, as did those in SC. However, the youngest son of Daniel Sisk (I think the name was Gabriel) remained in SC, married, and some years later moved to Georgia.

Per Nelly Clark's BLW, she married John Clark in Pendleton Dist., SC, in 1803. The marriage was witnessed by Gilbert Clark (probably a brother of John, or maybe nephew), who went with John and Nelly first to Sevier Co., TN, and then Bradley Co., TN. (Can't find Gilbert after 1850.)

I think you chose Bartlett Sisk as the father of Rachel as he was in the same area as the Yoacum family prior to their move to Bradley Co., TN. However, she was not his daughter but is the daughter of John Clark.

I have proof on all of the above. I don't have proof that Nelly is the dtr of Daniel, but she gave her birthplace as NC, and her age reflects that of the guardianship papers.

Since I can't find you through the Rootsweb descendancy on Rachel, I can't figure out which of Rachel & Isaac's children you go back to. However, I'd sure like to know, since it appears we are cousins.

Where are you? After being born and raised in Michigan, I moved to Nashville, TN, 18 months ago. My line is this: (maiden name underlined)
